Water-loving is like a duck-made art. they spend much of their lives afloat on lakes. This is thanks to the special oil from their preen glands, which keeps their feathers waterproof. Add their webbed feet for paddling, and you've got the perfect water bird.

Swimming is an activity tailored for otters. Sea otters spend the majority of their lives in the water, even sleeping while floating - doing the cutest thing ever, rafting, which means they hold hands to create an otter raft so they won't float away with currents. Water doesn't get them cold because they have basically the densest fur in the animal kingdom. When they need to dive in, otters can hold their breath for about five minutes, and river otters can hold it even longer.

Alligators and crocodiles are ambush swimmers, using their eyes and nostrils as periscopes while they cruise completely submerged. They can hold their breath underwater for a good several minutes when they're active, propelling themselves forward with their massive tails. And when they're resting, they can hold their breath for even an hour.

Surface floating with grace is what swans were born for. They glide on their waterproof feathers with their big webbed feet. Unlike ducks, they don't dive - they plunge their heads into the water, using their very long necks to reach underwater plants. Cygnets (baby swans) can swim right after they hatch, but they often prefer to hitchhike on their mama's back.

Platypus live right by the water, but they hunt under it. They can dive for about a minute at a time, while their eyes, ears, and nostrils are completely sealed. The crazy thing is that they locate their prey with electrical signals sensed through their bills. If being the weird egg-laying, venomous in the ankles, duck mammals they are wasn't weird enough…

Hippos are master bathing blobs, spending up to 16 hours per day in the water. But the funny thing is that they can't actually swim! They're too dense to float, hippos sort of bounce along riverbeds, holding their breath for around five minutes at a time. Water serves more of a purpose with them, as it protects their sensitive skin from the scorching sun. Oh, and another cool thing about hippos is that they can surface to take a breath even while being asleep.
